^ Only the first verse of the "Army March" is recognized as the official national anthem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
^ Neither the United States government nor Ngo Dinh Diem's State of Vietnam signed anything at the 1954 Geneva Conference. The non-communist Vietnamese delegation objected strenuously to any division of Vietnam, however, the French accepted the proposal Viet Minh proposal, that Vietnam be united by elections under the supervision of "local commissions". The United States, with the support of South Vietnam and the United Kingdom, countered with the "American Plan," which provided for United Nations supervised unification elections. The plan, however, was rejected by Soviet and other communist delegations.
